What is the ECHO Child Study?

The ECHO child study is a study on how environmental factors (like diet, exercise, and chemicals found in the environment) affect children’s growth and development. This study is joining forces with a nationwide research program called ECHO, or Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes. This program will combine information from about 50,000 children and their families at 200 locations nationwide to help researchers answer questions that the ECHO Child Study cannot answer alone.

​Why did we invite you?

Sometime in the past​ few years, we invited you and your child to join Kaiser Permanente’s ECHO (Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes) study. We sincerely thank you for participating.

We are now inviting you and your child to participate in the second cycle of the ECHO study, which is a 7-year study from 2024 to 2030. In this cycle, the ECHO study addresses the impact of a broad range of early environmental influences on health on various environmental exposures, e.g., physical, chemical, social, behavioral, and biological, on child health, including child wellbeing, development, obesity, and respiratory health. Below you will find information about how you and your child can participate in the ECHO study. We hope you will continue to support this very important research that has provided important findings on child health.​

What do you have to do to participate?

For years 2024 through 2030 of the ECHO Child Study, your participation will include signing the consent and assent forms, completing online surveys and attending one research visit per year. Research visits will be conducted at our Research Clinics or remotely. Activities may include collecting body measurements and biospecimens, conducting neurodevelopmental assessments, performing lung function exercises, monitoring physical & sleep activity for 7 days, and a blood pressure reading from your child. Research visit activities will vary from year to year. Before scheduling your research visit, we will provide a detailed explanation of activities you can expect to complete.​
